Fluoride Treatment

Overview

Fluoride treatment can help strengthen your child’s teeth and reduce their risk of cavities. At Northside Pediatric Dentistry in Ann Arbor, Dr. Minjoo Sanker and our team use fluoride as part of a preventive approach designed to protect young smiles and reduce the need for more involved dental treatment later.

We make each visit comfortable and easy to understand for both children and parents. If fluoride is recommended, we’ll explain why, what the treatment involves, and how you can support your child’s oral health at home.

What Does Fluoride Do for Children’s Teeth?

Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to acids produced by bacteria and sugary foods and drinks. For children, stronger enamel can mean a lower risk of cavities and fewer dental problems as they grow.

During a fluoride treatment, we typically apply fluoride varnish directly to the teeth. The application takes only a few minutes and is painless.

Children with a higher risk of tooth decay may benefit from fluoride treatments more often. Dr. Minjoo will consider your child’s age, dental history, oral hygiene, and cavity risk before recommending a treatment schedule.

Preventing decay also helps preserve healthy tooth structure, which supports comfortable chewing, speech development, and overall oral health.

When Do Kids Need Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride recommendations are based on each child’s individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule.

We may recommend fluoride treatment for children who have:

  • A history of cavities
  • Visible plaque buildup
  • Enamel defects or weakened enamel
  • Frequent exposure to sugary snacks or drinks
  • Early signs of tooth decay

Digital X-rays may also be used when appropriate to help identify dental problems that are not visible during a routine examination.

If fluoride is recommended, we’ll explain the reason for treatment and how it can help protect your child’s teeth. Our goal is to prevent dental pain and reduce the likelihood of more invasive treatment whenever possible.

What Happens During a Pediatric Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride treatment is usually quick and straightforward.

During your child’s appointment, we may first perform an examination and cleaning as needed. The hygienist then applies fluoride varnish directly to the teeth. Older children may receive another form of professional fluoride treatment when appropriate.

The fluoride remains on the enamel after the appointment, allowing it to continue strengthening the teeth.

Before you leave, our team will provide aftercare instructions, including any temporary recommendations about eating, drinking, or brushing.

How Often Do Children Need Fluoride Treatments?

The right frequency depends on your child’s risk of cavities and oral health.

Some children may only need fluoride as part of their routine preventive visits, while children with a higher risk of cavities may benefit from more frequent applications. Dr. Minjoo will recommend a schedule based on your child’s dental history and current needs.

Regular dental visits allow us to monitor changes in your child’s teeth and adjust preventive care when necessary.

How Can Parents Protect Their Child’s Teeth at Home?

Professional fluoride treatment works best when paired with consistent home care.

Parents can help protect their child’s teeth by:

  • Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Using a rice-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste for children younger than 3
  • Using a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for children ages 3 to 6
  • Supervising brushing until children can reliably brush on their own
  • Limiting sugary drinks and frequent sugary snacks
  • Offering water between meals
  • Keeping up with regular dental checkups

These daily habits can help strengthen enamel and reduce your child’s risk of cavities between visits.

Is Fluoride Safe for Kids?

Fluoride varnish is widely used as a preventive dental treatment for children when applied in appropriate amounts.

Because the varnish is painted directly onto the teeth, only a small amount is needed. Your child’s dentist will consider age, oral health, dental history, and other relevant factors before recommending fluoride treatment.

For younger children, we can also help parents understand how much fluoride toothpaste to use and how to supervise brushing safely.

Dr. Minjoo will review any relevant medical history or medications before treatment and answer questions so you can make an informed decision about your child’s dental care.
