Pediatric Dental Sedation

Overview

Dental visits can feel overwhelming for some children, especially when they are anxious, have a sensitive gag reflex, or need a longer procedure. Pediatric dental sedation can make treatment feel more manageable while helping your child receive the care they need safely and comfortably.

At Northside Pediatric Dentistry in Ann Arbor, Dr. Minjoo Sanker and our team offer sedation options, including nitrous oxide and oral sedation when appropriate. We take time to explain each option, discuss potential risks and benefits, and choose an approach based on your child’s age, medical history, treatment needs, and comfort level.

Pediatric Dental Sedation Options for Kids

Northside Pediatric Dentistry offers two common sedation options for children: nitrous oxide and oral sedation.

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is inhaled through a small nasal mask. It works quickly and helps children feel more relaxed while remaining awake and responsive. Its effects also wear off quickly after treatment.

Oral sedation uses prescribed medication to help a child relax before or during dental treatment. It may be considered when a child needs additional support to stay calm during longer or more involved procedures.

Dr. Minjoo Sanker reviews each child’s medical history and treatment needs before recommending a sedation option.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work for Children?

Nitrous oxide is delivered through a small mask placed over the child’s nose. As your child breathes normally, the gas helps reduce anxiety and create a calmer experience.

Your child remains awake and able to respond throughout treatment. The amount of nitrous oxide can be adjusted based on your child’s comfort and needs.

Because the effects generally wear off quickly once the gas is stopped, many children can return to their usual routine soon afterward.

How Does Oral Sedation Work?

Oral sedation involves prescribed medication that helps a child feel more relaxed during dental treatment. Depending on the treatment plan and the medication being used, specific preparation or recovery instructions may be required.

Our team reviews these instructions with parents in advance so they understand what to expect before, during, and after the appointment.

Because some children may remain tired or groggy afterward, parents should follow all transportation and recovery instructions provided by our team.

When Is Dental Sedation Recommended for Children?

Sedation may be helpful for children who:

  • Feel significant fear or anxiety about dental treatment
  • Have had a difficult dental experience in the past
  • Need a longer filling, crown, or multiple procedures
  • Have sensory challenges or difficulty sitting still
  • Have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult
  • Need additional support to complete necessary dental care safely

Sedation is not automatically necessary for every child who feels nervous. Dr. Minjoo Sanker considers your child’s individual needs and discusses appropriate alternatives before recommending medication.

What Should Parents Expect During a Sedation Dentistry Visit?

We want parents to understand what will happen throughout their child’s appointment.

A typical visit may include:

  • A review of your child’s medical history and current medications
  • An examination and discussion of the treatment plan
  • A review of the recommended sedation option
  • Monitoring throughout treatment
  • A recovery period, when needed
  • Aftercare and recovery instructions before you leave

Bring an up-to-date list of your child’s medications and let our team know about any recent changes in your child’s health. A familiar comfort item may also help your child feel more at ease during the visit.

Is Pediatric Dental Sedation Safe?

Safety is an important part of every sedation plan. Before recommending sedation, Dr. Minjoo Sanker reviews your child’s medical history, treatment needs, and other relevant factors.

Our team monitors children during treatment and provides parents with clear instructions for preparation and recovery. We also take time to explain potential benefits, possible side effects, and what parents should expect.

The goal is to use sedation only when it can help your child receive necessary dental care more comfortably and safely.
